NEW YORK Getty Images photographer Jeff Hutchens

Jeff Hutchens was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1978. The son of an American diplomat, he spent his childhood in various cities throughout the United States and across China, South Africa and the Philippines. He graduated from Asbury College in Kentucky with a double major in psychology and pre-med, but decided to follow his heart into photojournalism. After a series of photography internships, Jeff was hired by National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) to be their sole staff photographer based out of Washington, D.C. After two years with NGCI, he decided to continue his career as a freelancer, allowing him to spend more time pursuing personal projects.
Jeff spends roughly eight months per year traveling on assignment. He has shot professionally on five continents, where he’s faced grizzly bears, lava floes, Komodo dragons and all manner of corrupt officials. The subject of his work runs the gamut from the conceptual to adventure and from landscape to his greatest passion – social documentary. He has been on assignment for Time, Stern, MacLean’s, The New York Times Magazine, Sony, Singapore Airlines, The South Africa Tourism Board and the National Geographic Society, as well as countless other national and international publications.

Jeff has won multiple awards in the National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism competition, Pictures of the Year and the White House News Photographers Eyes of History competition. Additionally, Jeff is featured in a series of ten National Geographic Channel vignettes airing internationally. The vignettes follow him as he photographs across Vietnam, Australia, China, Switzerland, South Africa, Hong Kong and India.
Jeff is represented by Getty Images and lives in the Washington, D.C. area when not on assignment.

““But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”” -Jeremiah 17:7-8 Listen to chapter
